Microstrip patch antenna is one of the widely used antenna for communication. It has different properties which make them ideal for a lot of applications. Its structure consists of a conducting patch on top of a dielectric substrate and ground plane at bottom of substrate. This antenna has low profile planar configuration which can be easily integrated to host surface, low cost, low volume and light weight. But one of the disadvantages of this antenna is the relatively large area requirement, especially for lower frequencies. Therefore the antenna is miniaturized using different techniques. This paper focuses on various miniaturization techniques for patch antenna. It includes material loading, modification on patch, shorting and folding, modification on ground plane and use of metamaterials. The effects of these techniques on different antenna parameters is discussed in this paper.
